mymaria FCG: Take Advantage of Your Surroundings Jul 31, 2008 2:55 PM You know that expressions, sometimes what you are looking for is right under your nose? Well run with me here on my train of thought as I put together this post. Sometimes when we work out we don't really take advantage of our physical or geographic surroundings. We get into a routine of running on a treadmill, or doing a loop outside, or biking, lifting and stick within a structure of some sort of patterned routine. But, do you live by the beach? If so, when is the last time you went to the beach to walk, run, run in the water, swim, do yoga? Live by the mountains? When is the last time you hiked? Is there a nice natural trail system by your home? When's the last time you took advantage of that and walked, ran, or biked through the trails? Any big hills by you? Have you ever tried a nice 'hills workout' where you run up and then down a hill and really work your quads and glutes? Does your community have bike routes? Mine does, there are signs for the 'wildcat trail' all around and I still never gone it. So, take a moment and think about your neighborhood, hometown and area like an outsider ... you might think of some great ideas to change up your routine a bit and do something in a new location, or do something new entirely!
mymaria FCG: Commerical Time Fitness Jul 27, 2008 6:50 PM Yet another way to squeeze in some fitness... When you are watching TV, spice things up by doing some exercises during each commercial break. This will make the commercials fly by and help you sqeeze in some exercise even when you are being a couch potato. I find the time of a commercial break to be the perfect amount of time to focus on abs, or to do some pilates moves. Even if you bruoght out some dumbells you could do strength moves like bicept curls or lunges. Again, the opportunities are endless. You don't HAVE to be at the gym just to do a little bit extra. Speaking of extra, I took the opportunity today after I dropped off my friend to go run my old favorite running loop in the town I used to live in. I just always LOVED LOVED running there and had found the perfect loop and any chance I'm in that town I try and get it in and it was fantastic! Any other ideas for commercial break fitness or do you have a favorite run from an old place you used to live? Feel free to share!
mymaria FCG: Spice Up Your Workout With Role Playing Jul 23, 2008 6:25 PM Sounds kinky, right? Well get your mind out of the gutter! As I was working out tonight doing a strength move that was dancer-esque I realized a few things: 1) my workouts had gotten boring so I started to do a whole lot of new moves 2) I always wanted to be a dancer 3) the new moves I have been doing, are really quite dancer-ish Once I realized it, I kept going for it, doing more strength moves I've seen in fitness magazines that took an element of dance to it, or grace, and went ahead and did it. It was so much fun. I just kept going and doing more moves, and in my head thinking that I was a dancer training for a competition or something and I tell you what, it really made my time at the gym just fly and quite a pleasure! So I say try it! Wanted to be a dancer growing up? Do what I did. Or feeling insprired from the olympic trials watching track? Do track-inspired moves. Or by boxers, do some kickboxing moves. Go to the gym and live out your fantasy fitness life and have fun. I'll bet you'll have a blast and definitely spice up your routine. Any other ideas, feel free to share in the comments section!
mymaria FCG: Great Way to Get in ABS Jul 18, 2008 12:04 PM Hi everyone, Hope you had a great week and stayed true to your fitness and health objectives while still enjoying yourselves. I have to admit I've been doing my fair share of icecream eating recently, but do my best to cut back a little in any other indulegences that day if possible and stick with the workout program I have been doing. That being said, I've been doing this neat little trick to kick up my ab workouts and while at the beach the other day noticed that my abs are looking pretty toned and I think it's a good trick worth sharing: So, in between sets of lifting weights (for upper body I'm mostly at the cable machine area of the gym or free weights but you could do this anywhere) I do some ab exercise. Any sort of ab move would work, I have mainly been doing a pilates-esque move which involves 1) from seated position, lean upper body back and raise legs to knees while balancing on sit-bones, holding your knees with your hands and legs bent 2) once you are balanced in that position, slowly raise you bottom half of your legs (knees to toes) a little bit to feel a burn in your core 3) from there, alternated your legs hold your right knee while you extend your left leg out, then bring the left leg back in, hold that knee then extend your right leg. It sounds more complicated than it is. I'll try and get some photos of it later on and post them. I do 20 reps inbetween all my upper body moves and for those I do two reps of each exercise so by the end of my strength day, my abs are already worked on. I close out the session with regular plank and side plank, holding each plank for 60 seconds then I'm totally spent. Do you have any moves you do inbetween sets?
mymaria FCG: I'm back on the wagon! Jul 14, 2008 10:57 AM Hi everyone, I'm not sure if anyone still comes by and checks this out anymore, but after a long, long break from the fitness blogging, I came to check it out and was glad to see that the group got some use while I was not around! Well - I'm BACK! Whoo hooo! I'm not sure how the posts will go, if I'll try and start posting a new move a week or what yet, but I guess for now I'll just give you all a little background on what I've been up to fitness-wise since I last posted. This past winter I was working out on the steady and snowboarding a lot out in Colorado where my boyfriend lives. Then unfortunately in February I hurt my back pretty badly. I kept hoping it would work itself out but never did. Finally after one extremely painful morning where I was in tears and couldn't walk after a day on the slope, I got back home and made a doctors appointment and started going to a chiropractor and physical therapy. After two months of that and no other exercise, I am happy to say I am pain free and have my mobility back! For the past month and a half I've been back into working out again. I've been doing about 3-4 days of cardio, usually running, then three solid days of full-body lifting (Mon, Wed, Fri). My body is starting to bounce back and I am thankful I am able to work out again. Last week I went to a yoga class on Tuesday with my friend and will try and do that once a week to add some variety and continue some of that flexiblity work I have been doing. That's about it for catching up. Tonight I'll head to the gym and lift, do abs then afterwards run about 2.5 miles (my standard route from my home here in NH). What about you? Anyone want to catch up??
